What a nice tribute to the man! Celebrating his birthday by showing us a few of the jewels in his crown, so to speak. Now, if only I'd get my rear in gear and manage to see more than only THE SEVENTH SEAL!!! What a clodhopper I be!

My favourite Bergman is still one of the lesser and earlier ones "Smiles on A Summer Night". I love the whimsy, humour and worldliness of it, not to mention that it was good enough for Stephen Sondheim to make a musical version of it which also worked well -- except when they made it into a movie.

Cerpts : You sure be! I'm always torn between Bergman and Kurosawa as the Greatest Director of All Time - depending on the mood I'm in. I'm sure you'll love the movies if you get your rear in gear!

Terry : I was going for images rather than favourites. I only saw SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT for the first time recently and loved it. The early Bergman's seem more optimistic than the later ones. My all=time favourite is WINTER LIGHT which is one of his darkest films because I recognise much that I can personally relate to AND, although it may not be immeadiatley apparent I think the ending of the film is optimistic.
